National Seminar on

Women and Media : Challenges and Opportunities

From 3rd March, 2014 to 4th March, 2014



Centre for Bangladesh Studies and Department of Bengali, Assam University, Silchar is going to hold National Seminar on the above said topic from 3rd March, 2014 to 4th March, 2014. Abstracts are welcome from the scholars. Paper should reach by 15th January, 2014. Papers would be peer reviewed.

Hospitality and Traveling Allowance : The organizing committee will make modest arrangements for boarding and lodging in local Hotels at Silchar, Assam. Keeping the budget constraints, the delegates to the extent possible, are requested to arrange travelling expenses from their respective institutions/organizations.


Brief history of the collaborating University  :
Assam University came into existence through Assam (Central) University Act, 1989. It was established in 1994, since then the University is steadily becoming an excellent centre of learning. The campus, situated in Dargakona, about 20 kms from  Silchar, is set amid sprawling hillocks, a typical landscape in the  North East. The campus in an area of 600 acres surrounded by lakes and mountains provides  an ideal environment for academic pursuit.  Drawing its 230 plus faculty from many disciplines, from all over the country, the university sustains a multidisciplinary approach to higher education.  The University has sixteen Schools on major disciplines.  There are 35 Departments under these Sixteen Schools. The University is situated in South Assam, bordering Bangladesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. The Barak River flows across this region known as Barak valley. The valley has a rich tradition of art, literature, culture and education. It has contributed a large number of eminent personalities to the nation in the fields of science, education, arts and many others. This historical heritage has given the place a strong foundation for the development of a Centre of Excellence in higher education. The five districts under the jurisdiction of Assam University have as many as 53 Colleges, which speak of the depth of the intellectual and educational interests in the region. The University has gradually started attracting students from the neighbouring states. The University is set to become a full-fledged residential University in near future creating a better environment for learning and research activities. Assam University is a teaching-cum-affiliating University. The objectives of the University are to "disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit and by examples of its corporate life to make provisions for integrated courses in humanities, natural and physical sciences and social sciences in the educational programmes of the University; to take appropriate measure for promoting inter-disciplinary studies and research in the University; to educate and train manpower for development of the state of Assam; and to pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of that state, their intellectual, academic and cultural development."




THE HOST CITY: Silchar is the headquarter of Cachar district in the state of Assam in India. It is the economic gateway to the state of Mizoram and part of Manipur. It is situated 420 Kilometers south east of Guwahati. Silchar has tremendous commercial importance and is the second largest city in the state of Assam. The city consequently witnesses the settlement of a sizeable population from all walks of life from distance parts of India. Being a very peaceful place in the North – East India, it earned the bon mot of “Island of Peace” from India‟s the then Prime Minister (Late) Smti. Indira Gandhi. Silchar is situated on the banks of the River Barak, after which the area is popularly known as Barak Valley. Over the past few years, the city is constantly witnessing peripheral expansion due to city‟s increasing future prospects and other developments in the field of education, medical facilities and the booming real estate market and other commercial businesses, making it quite a cosmopolitan one. Silchar city is the history as the Tea Capital of South Assam. Silchar is well connected by air with Kolkata, Guwahati, Agartala, Imphal and Tezpur. Besides, regular rail and bus services are also there.


CLIMATE : Summer is hot, humid and interspersed with rains and thunderstorms. The average temperature during January is between 15-20°C.

HOW TO REACH: Silchar is the headquarter of Cachar District in the state of Assam in India. It is 343 kilometers away in south east of Guwahati. Known as the second gateway of North-East Silchar is the second largest city of Assam. The city is well connected by all modes of transport. Nearest airport is located at 22 kilometers away, at Kumbhirgram.
